The other thing I forgot to mention about Vermont, is that it's green there because it rains and rains and rains there. When we had first arrived, we were sitting outside the rental office in a nickel-sized hail storm when this huge bolt of lightening stuck right next to our two cars. It was a bit disconcerting! But the rain did eventually stop in time for us to do what we had come to Queeche to do...hike.
The boys love to go "hiking" with their Aunt Ginger, which usually just involves walking around a park near one of our houses or taking the dogs for a night walk. This time, they got to experience some real hiking...up Gile Mountain. It was a relatively short hike, and at the end was a fire tower that we could climb to get a 360-degree view of the Green Mountains. Will, Charles, and William took off on the hike like it was a race. They had to be stopped several times so that the adults could catch up. Ben, who one of our friends just nicknamed "molasses", was feeling a bit frustrated in not being able to catch up while also taking time to examine the local flora as we went along. He was really fascinated with the mushrooms that were growing everywhere we looked; mushrooms of every color and size you can imagine. (like I said, it's a damp place, Vermont)
Madeleine and Brian went to school at nearby Dartmouth, and loved to hike together in the mountains, so they knew just where to take us and how to manage well. Madeleine packed us all some GORP (good old raisins and peanuts) that the boys enjoyed together after climbing the fire tower. I love this picture of them sitting on this huge boulder at the bottom of the fire tower, enjoying their little snack. It was great fun.
We took a ton of pictures on this hike, many of which can be seen by clicking on the picture below. It shows you our favorite scenic shots from our entire trip if you're interested.
