We have recently returned from our first, full-fledged family vacation. I was a bit concerned about our almost-4 hour flight from Dallas to Boston, but the boys were expert travellers, hardly a complaint from either one the entire trip. We really enjoyed being together and experiencing some new things alongside the boys. As they like to say this trip was their "first time to fly on a plane, first time out of Texas, first time to go up so high, and first time to go so fast."
Here are Jim and the boys ready to board our first flight in Dallas. I think Ben might be more proud of his McDonald's Transformer's toy than the fact that he's about to fly for the first time.
We were visiting our friends, Madeleine and Brian, who live in Concord, MA. They have four boys: Charles (6), William (6), Allan (3) and Luke (10 mos). Can you believe they actually said yes to us coming?! As if their lives aren't chaotic enough.
As you can see, the boys had a great time together. They really enjoyed having new playmates. At first, they were a bit timid. But by the end of our trip, there were tears as they had to leave one another. Will said so many times on the way home, "I am going to miss William and Charles and Allan and baby Luke." We're hoping that the Crounse gang can make it down to Texas in a couple of years so that we can return the favor.
Our first full day there, we went on a whale watch right out of Boston Harbor. It was amazing. We took an hour ride out on a high-speed catamaran and saw both fin whales and humpbacks. As you can see in the picture above, the whales came right up to our boat. These two are humpback whales. We had to stay an extra 15 minutes in the feeding area because these two were too close to our boat for us to turn on our engines to make the return trip. We saw so many whales, the boys were kind of over it by the time we left. They kept asking, "When are we going to go back?" when there were these gorgeous creatures right next to our boat. It was like, "ho, hum, more humpbacks". After our whale watch, we walked to Quincy Market, where we had a great outdoor lunch of pizza. Then we kept up the walking (this was probably the one and only time that we heard complaints from the kids...they were hot and tired) through Boston Common to the Boston Public Gardens, where we rode the swan boats. We capped the day off with pictures on the Make Way for Ducklings statues and an ice cream treat before hitting the gift shop and heading home. It was a packed-full, great first day.
