Here are some pictures from Will's field day this year. He enjoyed himself until the ribbons were handed out. Ribbons were given out for four events, with 6 places for each event. He won one ribbon--5th place--in the 50 yard dash. Others won more. He was very disappointed. There were tears. Lots of tears. His friend Sara came over and asked "What's wrong with Will?" I said, "He's just a little sad because he only got one ribbon." She said, "I have four ribbons." I said, "I see! That's great." She said, "I have two first place ribbons." I said, "Sara, that's wonderful. What did you get them in?" She said, "I got them in the long jump and in the tennis ball throw." I said, "I saw you do the tennis ball throw, and you were very good. I didn't get to see the long jump part of the day." She said to Will, "Will, you can have one of my first place ribbons. Would that make you feel better?"
I was already trying to hold myself together, my heart so sad for my little boy who was disappointed after a fun day. And when Sara offered her ribbon to Will, I just melted inside (still no tears on the outside, though! I held tough!) Will took her ribbon from her, said thank you, and we finally saw a smile again.
Tomorrow, Will is going to write Sara a letter to say thank you and to return her ribbon. We've talked about how she is the one who earned it and should have it. We've also talked about what kind of friend Sara is. She's a keeper, we've decided.
