Last weekend, we took the boys to the Kaska Family Farm in West, TX (http://www.kaskafamilyfarm.com/). They have all kinds of fun, Fall events for us to do together. They had a pumpkin patch, a hay maze, a hay jump, a hay ride, a "cow train", and a corn maze.
Will's favorite part was the corn cannons, which were these pneumatic devices that they put a corn cob into and let you shoot it off at something like 400 feet towards targets.
Ben's favorite part was the rubber duck water pump races. He was soaking wet by the end of the night.
Jim's parents and his brother, Joe, were here to go with us. We had a great time together.
The farm included a haunted corn maze for Halloween. Uncle Joe and Papoo went through the haunted maze to see what it was like. They returned, reporting that it was not at all scary, no one jumped out at you, no one grabbed you, and the boys should try it. So, against our deepest seated reservations, we got in line for the haunted maze, all the while reassuring the boys that nothing scary would happen. So, we started out and got about 3 yards in when Ben decided he needed to turn back, too scary. So, he and Jim returned to the entrance. Will and I had settled ourselves at the back of the group, thinking that we'd have sufficient warning should anything jump out. Not three steps later, we are screaming together after a kid in a mask, about 13 years old, jumped out of the corn and grabbed Will (yes, grabbed him). Needless to say, we turned around immediately and got out of there, leaving the grandparents and Uncle Joe to traverse the rest alone.
Lesson learned: don't let uncles without children convince you to do something your gut tells you isn't right for your kids. We love our Uncle Joe, but he's a bit more of a risk-taker than we are.
